What Are the Symptoms of Food Intolerance? Is Food Intolerance a Food Allergy? Can we be protected from Food Intolerance? Is It Possible to Treat Food Intolerance?

Esra Aydın, our Nutrition and Dietetic Specialist, tells us all the details about Food Intolerance.

Food intolerance is an inflammatory response of our digestive system to foods or additives in foods, heavy metals, and toxic substances such as dyes, due to the deterioration of the intestinal barrier due to tissue damage in our intestines during the digestion or non-digestion of food.

Food Intolerance Is Not A Food Allergy!

Food intolerance is often confused with food allergy.  The allergy test looks for a substance called immunoglobulin E (IgE), whereas the food intolerance test for the immune system looks for immunoglobulin G (IgG). In food allergies, foods are removed from the diet and are not replaced. Therefore, food intolerance differs from food allergy.

What Are the Symptoms of Food Intolerance?

  • Obesity,
  • Difficulty in losing weight
  • Migraine attacks,
  • Edema of unknown cause,
  • Gas formation in the gastrointestinal system,
  • Constant tiredness,
  • Frequent skin problems,
  • Diarrhea and gastric problems,
  • Sleep disorders

 How Is Food Intolerance Diagnosed?

For food intolerance test, blood is taken from the patient and analyzed in the laboratory. This procedure is usually done by sampling blood from the fingertip. The collected blood sample is tested in laboratories and immunoglobulin antibodies against various foods are detected. It is concluded that the person has a sensitivity to the food that has an antibody response. The analysis of the blood sample taken results in an average of 15 days. This analysis examines the patient’s sensitivity to which of these different nutritional components.

How Is Food Intolerance Treated?

Treatment of food intolerance is accomplished by removing foods that have an antibody response from the diet or consuming them in amounts the body can tolerate. If intolerant foods are among the essential foods of the body, other foods with the same characteristics should be consumed instead of these intolerant foods. Thus, weight loss can be easier, as the digestive system will also be relaxed. However, this test may result in sensitivity to the following various foods: especially yeast, tomatoes, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and walnuts,

which are rich in vitamins and minerals and have many benefits for the body. The complete elimination of these foods from the diet may have negative rather than positive effects on health. After the above-mentioned complaints disappear, intolerant foods should be consumed in small amounts.
